Israeli State Terrorism: War in the Shadows

Alireza Miryousefi

“There is no non-government terrorism outside. In fact, terrorism is nothing but a shadow war between national intelligence services,” a Pakistani researcher once told this week, at a think-tank event in Istanbul.
I was not so sure at the time that this was true, but over the years it has become more plausible to me. In today’s world, the majority of the instances of terror can be associated with state terrorism.
Although state-sponsored and state terrorism have ancient roots, the prime example of modern state terrorism is the Israeli regime. The root of the current Israeli regime is the Haganah terrorist group, which formed assassination squads in the 1920s in Palestine and became a main paramilitary branch of the Jewish Agency.
This practice continued inside and outside the Occupied Territories after the declaration of an Israeli regime in 1948, which owed its existence to the numerous and violent assassinations by Haganah.  From the 1950s through the 1980s, state terrorist acts by Israel focused mainly on Arab countries—Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria. Quite a few Arab scientists and personalities were assassinated in those countries during this period.
In recent decades the focus has been on Iran. According to several reports, the Israeli regime, in its operations inside Iran, relies mainly on the MEK terrorist cult, but also on separatist groups inside and outside Iran. The recent assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, whose role and importance Benjamin Netanyahu made clear last year in publicly naming him, is the latest terror example by a regime whose seeds have been sown by assassination and state terrorism. Israeli regime never hesitate to commit reckless murders, as a rough regime who violates consistently international law and civil norms.
An important point to consider is that in order to counter such a terroristic activities, appropriate methods must be resorted to. Besides working on international and multilateral arena, a recovery of national and strategic deterrence, in addition to increasing safeguards at home, requires a review of intelligence methods and the strengthening of intelligence cooperation with friendly countries and institutions.
Undoubtedly, the purpose of the Israeli regime’s recourse to this state terrorism, in addition to harming the country’s scientific and technological advances, is to destabilise the region as much as possible on the eve of important changes in the geopolitics of the region.
The Iranian Islamic revolution has endured numerous ups and downs over its history. But with the sacrifices of people like Fakhrizadeh, and without a doubt, the fruits of these sacrifices will be seen in the future prosperity and of Iranians and the progress of our nation.
